YORKSHIRE INTER-DISTRICT COMPETITION - 2008
On Sunday 20th July 2008 the West Riding & Spen Valley
District Association set off to Castleford to compete in the
above one day competition.
Representing the Association were Mr N T Briggs - President,
Mr I G Mc Wilson - Vice President, Mr D I Arnold - Secretary/
Treasurer.
The 13 man squad representing the Association comprised of
Mr Stephen Pinfield (Captain) Chris Blakeley / Richard Brook
/ Neil Ewart / Paul Firth / David Fox / Graham Higgins John
Hopkinson / Peter Jagger / Adam Kelk / Duncan Reeves / Michael
Robinson / Michael Sweeney
The squad representing a number of clubs was got together
on the day in the hope of repeating what the 1998 squad achieved
in winning the competition.
There were 10 District Associations represented on the day,
West Riding were to play at Fryston Welfare against Halifax
and East Coast, this was to be a round robin series of matches
with the aggregate winners going into the Semi Finals. (GROUP
A)
Harrogate and Bradford were to play at Haw Hill Park and were
to play one another twice (GROUP B)
Huddersfield and Wakefield were to play at Townville and were
to play one another twice (GROUP C)
Castleford - Leeds - Skipton were at Queens Park and were
to play on a round robin basis. (GROUP D)
Onto the West Riding matches and the first game was against
Halifax, where West Riding won 196 -157
Halifax then played East Coast and won 193 - 166. Halifax
total 350.
West Riding completing the round robin format went onto beat
East Coast 200 - 123.
West Riding total 396, and into the Semi-Finals
The Semi-Finals were at Saville Park and we were to play the
winners of Group 'C' ( 2 greens at this venue)
Huddersfield had won their group and were our Semi-Final opponents
Whilst on the other green Bradford were playing the host Association
Castleford.
The green appeared on the heavy side and our opponents Huddersfield
were making us play.
With the support from other team players and spectators West
Riding beat Huddersfield 171 - 170
Onto the Finals and we were to play the host district Castleford
- the venue - Pontefract BC
With a 10" crown and a 36 x 35 size green, which was
in a good condition and running well the home side were clearly
relishing a good match.
So it proved with West Riding in front 78-66 after 4 jacks,
the lead changed hands and Castleford led 146-143 after 8
jacks, the last 2 games finally realising a 187-178 victory
for the hosts.
We went with a squad of 13 players, every one of the players
played and did credit to themselves and the team, losing by
a margin of only 9 chalks in a final is testament to the team
and the exemplary way in which they performed on the day.
Players wore shirts and tops provided for them ( for which
each player contributed 30% of the cost) the rest of the expenditure
was borne by the Association.
A special mention to Stephen Pinfield, who not only captained
the side, but brought together a "team" of players
who were chosen to represent their district, and did so in
style.
Stephen has worked very hard to put together such a team,
and deserves all the plaudits coming his way.
For my part, I think I speak for everyone that was there,
it was a pleasure to be part of such a splendid day, and suggests
that we are once more a district with a purpose.
Many thanks to you all
David I Arnold
