The West Riding Amateur Bowling Association was founded as early as 1904, with the first Merit Competition taking place in 1905. The winner being a Mr A Thomis from Low Moor Harold. This season 2004, will see the 100th running of the Competition.

The West Riding/ Pilling Cup Competition only has records dating back to 1996. Again details of of the winners and runnes up can be found on the Roll of Honour page.

Records suggest that there was a league formed in 1923 comprising of just one division, which played for the Tom Horsfall Cup, the first team to win this cup was Spen Victoria, whose captain Team Captain was A Bateman. 1924, 1925, 1926 and 1927 also showed a continuation to the league.

It was in 1928 that the Spen Valley Bowling Association formation took place, the Association becoming affiliated to the Yorkshire County Bowling Association.

From 1928 until 1955 the Association continued with just one division. This became two divisions in 1956, when the Wilson Cup was played for. The first team to win the cup was Spenborough Ex Servicemens, whose team captain was A Holmes.

The first team competition took place in 1931 and was known then as it is now as The Spen Press Challenge Cup. The first winner of the Cup being Cleckheaton CBC.

The first Individal Merit competition took place in 1937, and was won by a Mr A Hurley.

The Late Mr Stanley Rouse was the secretary of the Spen Valley Bowling Association from 1945 to 1996 (51 years).

Following prolonged discussions between the management of the West Riding and Spen Valley associations, it was agreed that an amalgamation of both associations would benefit bowling within the area.

On the 14th January 2002 the West Riding and Spen Valley Crown Green Bowling Association was founded.

The association is affiliated to the Yorkshire Crown Green Bowling Association, and is responsible for the running of Yorkshire competitions within the area.

The association also takes part in the Yorkshire Inter-District team cup competition.

In it's own right the WR & SV CGBA run an 8 Division league as well.

Various Cup/ Merit/ Pairs competitions continue to add interest throughout the season, thanks to the continued support of the various sponsors.
